According to the Kirinyaga Central Sub County Police Commander Doreen Oduor, the suspect was arrested from his hideout at Wanguru town by detectives who have on his trail since the murder was reported.
The police boss said the suspect admitted to the killing during interrogations but refused to reveal why he killed his lover.
“We have the suspect in custody after arresting him today morning, he’s not remorseful and we suspect he must be a member of cult movement,” Ms Oduor said.
She said that detectives are investigating more claims that the suspect may have killed more women in his compound and buried them there.
Ms Oduor said that the suspect appeared calm, unresponsive but cooperated with the police.
He will be arraigned on Monday, June 29, pending a murder charge.
“We will ask court to grant us more days to hold the suspect so that we can complete the investigations,” she said.
The victim’s body was exhumed by police on Friday, June 26, after the detectives obtained a court order.
Her dismembered body was exhumed in an emotionally charged exercise overseen by Ms. Oduor, Kirinyaga Sub County Commissioner Daniel Ndege, and top medical doctors from Kerugoya Referral Hospital.
According to Mr. Ndege, the body had been cut into pieces, the stomach opened and the intestines removed before it was set on fire.
The suspect is said to have burnt the n.a.k.e.d body with a tyre.
The victim was identified as Mary Wanjiku, a casual labourer at Kaigo town after it was exhumed by police.
